1737 - Need To Talk

tahi - whitu - toru - whitu -1737

The 1737 team provides brief counselling support, identifying key issues, helping plan some steps to take and, in many cases, connecting with more comprehensive support services available. 1737 is not a Crisis team or a mental health service for people with severe mental illness or psychological distress.
We often support people with:

  • Depression/sadness

  • Relationship issues (family, friends, partner)

  • Anxiety/fear

  • Grief, loss, and life changing events

  • Stress at work/home/school/university or tech

  • Isolation and loneliness

    What can someone call about?

Anyone feeling stressed, worried, down, or needing tautoko (support) or someone to talk to can call or text.

We offer tautoko (support) for anything having an impact on your wellbeing (e.g. stress regarding school or work, relationship issues with friends/family/partners, etc).

When you phone 1737 you now have the option to talk to someone with lived experience of wairangi/mental distress who is trained to provide tautoko/support.

If that sounds like something you’d like... phone 1737 and when you do, select the ‘peer support’ option in the first stage of the call.

    What is “peer support”?

The 1737 Peer Support workers you’ll talk with have been there. We have experienced similar life pressures to you and can share with you how we have made things work for us.

We want to hear your story. We’ll awhi/support you to make some sense of your own experiences. We want to share what we’ve learnt. We think people who have ‘been there’ have something meaningful to share with each other.

What do you need to know?

The service is completely free and confidential.

1737 Peer Support operates a little differently from the existing 1737 counsellor support:

    • 1737 Peer Support operates daily, but just between 2pm-10pm. (However, 1737 counsellors are still as always available 24/7).

    • You need to phone 1737 and talk directly to a 1737 Peer Support team member. You cannot have a text conversation with a peer support worker.

  • Everyone feels sad or down sometimes, but when these feelings last a long time, it can be really tough.

  • Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. It’s a common experience that many people go through.

  • Grief is a natural response to loss and it’s not just about feeling sad. It can manifest in many different ways.

Here are some ideas that might help while you wait for 1737 support:

    • Acknowledge your feelings and remember that it's okay to grieve in your own way

    • Practice self-compassion and give yourself the care you need

    • Reach out to others to express your feelings and talk about your loss

    • Identify strategies that might help, however small

    • Avoid making major decisions until you feel more stable.

  • Everyone experiences stress at some point, and it can occur when we face some form of pressure (whether real or imagined, the impact is the same).

Here are some ideas that might help while you wait for 1737 support:

  • Loneliness is a feeling of sadness or distress about being by yourself or feeling disconnected from others. It’s not just about being alone.

Here are some ideas that might help while you wait for 1737 support:

  • The 1737 counselling service has launched a new video to explain the support available for all communities, including the Deaf and hard of hearing community.

We have been working with Platform Trust alongside the Deaf and hard of hearing community to understand how to improve support and access to 1737, for Deaf people.

1737 is a free, confidential, service that provides support for everyone, including the deaf community by phone, text or calling via the relay service.

Counsellors from 1737 have received training so they can better support anyone from the deaf community calling 1737. The service is available anytime, 24 hours a day.

Check out the new 1737 Video for more information.
