YWCA

Supporting women in the Christchurch community since 1883

About Us

We are here to assist with Transitional Housing via referral through MSD and other social service agencies. We offer transitional housing at three sites.

At our Hereford Street site we offer transitional housing to women and children only; at our other sites the housing is open to all whānau, Dads included.

Give us a call Monday to Friday between 8am-4pm, to make an appointment to meet with us.

We are here to support you if you are in need of a place to stay.

In Christchurch, we offer emergency and transitional accommodation for women and women with children.

About staying with us:

  • Our units are all fully self-contained

  • We provide you with linen

  • Conditions of stay are different at all three sites

  • No drugs or alcohol allowed on any of our sites

  • We assist with behavioural change and provide opportunities for ongoing growth

What you need to know:

  • An initial assessment is required in order to stay with us. It’s also important to note that we have a zero-tolerance policy towards non-prescription drugs, alcohol and abusive behaviour

  • You will need to pay rent each week, and this includes a power and Wi-Fi component

  • You will need to provide your own food, but we share any additional donated food with all residents

  • We have speakers and a Life Skills program for learning how to budget, apply for housing, better health and wellness, C.V. writing and referral services to other agencies

How we support you while staying with us:

  • We can assist you with applying for private rentals and social housing

  • We have on-site counselling during the academic year

  • We have sausage sizzles once a month and other events

  • Life Skills programmes and other opportunities available for those that want to pursue goals

The YWCA is a proudly feminist organisation and has been supporting women and girls challenging gender inequality in Aotearoa New Zealand for over 140 years.  Our work continues to support the well-being, development and achievement of women and girls in a society that still does not afford an equal place to us alongside men.
