Ka Puta Ka Ora Emerge Aotearoa is a for-purpose, charitable organisation that supports the oranga (wellbeing) for tāngata whaiora and whānau.
We support people from diverse communities across Aotearoa and from all walks of life through a broad range of health, housing, social and wellbeing services.
Established in 2015 and previously known as Emerge Aotearoa, our name ‘Ka Puta Ka Ora Emerge Aotearoa’ was gifted to us by Kaumātua Koro Rewi Rubal Rapana of Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Hauā in 2023. This change in name represents our strong ties to tangata whenua and our commitment to become a Tāngata Tiriti organisation.
Our Name
“Ka Puta Ka Ora” is part of many tongikura (prophecies) given by Kīngi Tāwhiao Pōtatau Te Wherowhero, the second Māori King. The tongikura was an affirmation and encouragement to inspire his people to emerge out of hardship into new wellness and prosperity.
“Māku anō e hanga tōku nei whare. Ko ngā poupou he māhoe, he patatē, ko te tāhuhu he hīnau noa.”
I shall fashion my house. The support posts shall be of māhoe and patatē, the ridge pole of hīnau.
Our name carries the same spirit as Tāwhiao’s tongikura: It is an invitation for people, whānau and their communities to come forth and thrive – ka puta ka ora. Our name inspires our vision and promise to support oranga for Aotearoa – ‘Tautokohia te mana tāngata, kia puta kia ora’. Our three Pou – Māori succeeding as Māori, lived experience and diversity are privileged and Thriving Pacific peoples – guide our mahi and are the lens through which we measure our success.
Our Mahi
We deliver a broad range of health, housing and social services for people from Te Tai Tokerau (Northland) to Waihōpai (Invercargill) and from all walks of life including:
The people who work here come from the communities we serve and have a sense of belonging and confidence. We believe that a diverse and inclusive workplace fosters creativity, innovation, and success.
Maori Succeeding as Maori
Better outcomes for Māori tāngata whaiora, whānau and communities are achieved when Māori can exercise their tino rangatiratanga (self determination) and actively participate in their wellbeing journeys.
Lived Experience & Diversity are Privileged
Lived experience and diversity is central to all we do – people from marginalised communities are represented at all levels of our organisation and influence the services we provide.
Thriving Pacific Peoples
Our Pasifika framework represents our commitment to improving cultural understanding so we might better serve our Pacific communities, including kaimahi.
